The Zion Conservatory of Music:
Special Programs
Honor Roll Program:
Students are encouraged to record their practice times on a monthly calendar and turn it in to their
teacher when it is complete. If they reach the monthly practice goal for their level, they will be named to the Honor Roll for that
month. Names of the honor students will appear in the local newspaper, recital programs and on the Conservatory bulletin
board. After two consecutive Honor Rolls, a small prize is given. Students with six Honor Rolls by the end of April will
receive an award at Commencement.
Recitals:
Monthly recitals provide students with the opportunity to perform for peers, faculty and family. Recitals are held on
the third Monday of each month, October through May, at 7 and 8 pm. See the calendar for exact dates. Students are assigned by
their teacher to perform when they are sufficiently prepared.
Recital etiquette is important to ensure a good experience for both performer and listener. Students and parents are encouraged
to be prompt, stay for the entire recital and to remain quiet and attentive when others are performing. The dress for recital performers
is as follows: Boys - dress slacks and shoe with dress shirt or sweater. Girls - dress slacks and shoes with blouse or sweater;
dresses or skirts optional, but must be knee length or longer.
Exams:
Instrumental exams are held each years in January and May as part of the curriculum. Students perform prepared
pieces, technical exercises and sight-reading for two or more faculty members other than their teacher. Students are given the
opportunity to review their written exam sheets that include faculty comments and the student's level of promotion.
Commencement:
Commencement is held in early June and honors Conservatory graduates as well as students being promoted to the
next level in the curriculum. Promoted students are awarded a certificate and Honor Roll students receive an additional award.
Graduates receive a diploma from the Conservatory. Pre-Collegiate graduating students perform a concerto as the centerpiece of the
ceremony. All students are strongly encouraged to attend.
Jazz Program:
The jazz program at the Zion Conservatory of Music is one of the organization's newest additions to the curriculum. The program has developed
from a series of yearly master classes initiated by Dr. Selva into an integral part of the conservatory's educational vision. This year marks the first in
implementing an extensive plan to develop jazz studies at the Conservatory by programming concerts, master classes, guest artists and many other exciting
activities. These activities are not only open to the students of the Conservatory, but to anyone interested in participating. Private lessons focusing on jazz
performance style, improvisation, composition/arranging and theory are available at the Conservatory for instrumentalists and vocalists. Jazz is an
original American art form and is an important part of a well-rounded musical education in light of our contemporary musical culture.
