Honor Roll Program

Students are encouraged to record their practice time on a ZCM monthly calendar, which is available for download below. This is to be signed by a parent and turned in to the instructor at the end of each month. If the practice goal for their level has been met for the month, the student will be named to the Honor Roll or Superior Honor Roll for that month. Names of honor roll students will appear in the local newspaper, recital programs and on the Conservatory bulletin board. Students with six monthly Honor Roll awards for the entire year will be recognized at the Commencement and Awards Ceremony in June.

Monthly recitals provide students with the opportunity to perform for peers, faculty, family and friends. Recitals are usually held on the third Monday of each month, October through May, at 7:00 and 8:00 pm. Younger students are usually scheduled for the early recital and more advanced students perform on the second program. See the calendar page for exact dates. Students are assigned by their instructor to perform when they are sufficiently prepared.

Recital etiquette is important to ensure a good experience for both performer and listener. Students and parents are encouraged to be prompt, stay for the entire recital and to remain quiet and attentive when others are performing. The dress for recital performers is as follows: Boys – dress slacks and shoes with dress shirt or sweater. Girls – dresses or skirts which are knee length or longer or dress slacks and shoes with blouse or sweater. Please, no exposed midriffs for girls or immodest necklines.

Graded performance exams and hearings are held each year in January and May as part of both the Music Certificate Program and the Music Builders Program. Note: All Conservatory students in either of these programs are required to participate in some form of performance or hearing at least once per year of study, when considered appropriate by the student’s instructor. Depending on the program in which the student is enrolled, the exam will either be a graded performance, or a non-graded performance for the faculty which will consist of written comments of a very general nature. The objective is to give students the opportunity to play for someone other than their regular instructor to build confidence and receive feedback on what they have prepared. Students are then given the opportunity to review their exam sheets and written comments.

Commencement and Award Programs

The Commencement and Awards Program is held in early June for Conservatory graduates, Music Certificate and Music Builder students, Honor Roll recipients as well as other award recipients. Awards and certificates are presented in recognition of student accomplishments. Typically, graduating students are featured in performance followed by the awards presentations. The evening ends with an ice cream sundae reception sponsored by ZCM and the ZCM faculty. All students are strongly encouraged to attend this festive occasion.

Other Performance Oppurtunities

During the school year and over the summer break, there may be other opportunities for students to perform. In the past, ZCM students have performed at local nursing homes, women’s clubs, farmers markets and other community events. Often, a donation is made to the Conservatory Scholarship fund in appreciation for these performances. We may call upon your student to occasionally perform at these events.
